Building History

Merchant Charles C. Bartlett (born 05/09/1837 in Kennebunk, ME-d. 01/13/1893 in Los Angeles, CA) erected this sandstone store building in 1881, constructed at the significant cost of $50,000. According to the Jefferson County Historical Society, Bartlett served as the architect, engineer and builder of this stone retail building.

Bartlett was raised in Kennebunk, ME, but relocated to timber-rich WA sometime between 1859 and 1867. (Bartlett was listed as a merchant living in Port Townsend in the Pacific Coast Directory, 1867.) He wed Mary Bartlett (born c. 1831 in Ireland-d. 01/18/1898 in Jefferson County, WA) and lived with her in Port Townsend in 1880, according to the US Census. In 1880, Charles and Mary had a boarder, H.C. Burkett (born c. 1860 in ME) who worked as a clerk in the store. This census was taken one year before the Bartlett Stone Building was erected, meaning this was at least the second store occupied by the merchant.

They also had a son, Francis Albert "Frank" Bartlett (born 04/20/1859 in West Boylston, MA-d. 06/18/1911 in Port Townsend, WA), who would be a long-time resident of Port Townsend, and who built a notable Second Empire house at 314 Polk Street.

This website indicated that the building has, over the years, accommodated a dry goods store, clothing store, bowling alley, drug store, shoe store, flower shop and travel agency. The building also had space for offices, rented to the town's lawyers, dentists and others. (See Jefferson County Historical Society.org, "Bartlett's Stone Building," accessed 06/01/2023.) Charles C. Bartlett originally operated a successful grocery and general store at this address.

Alteration

An extensive renovation occurred to Bartlett's Stone Building in 1992.
