Overview

Set in a canyon, the Brown House had a long, linear plan, stretching out on a lot measuring 154 x 54 feet.

Building History

Los Angeles Modernist architect Carl Maston (1915-1992) designed this low-slung residence for a real estate broker, Claude M. Brown. Maston was noted for his use of indoor-outdoor rooms, and he shaped the northern portion of this house around a walled courtyard. To the south, the house opened to a paved patio with a pool. An additional office/living unit stood on the south end of the property. In 2023, the Brown House had a very small amount of green space left on the property, with the house sited on the east very close to the property at 1905 Franklin Canyon Drive.

Building Notes

In 2018, the Brown House contained 4 bedrooms and 5 baths, and contained 2,950 square feet. It had an asking price of $2,950,000 at that time. (See Michael Locke, Flickr.com, "Claude M. Brown Residence, Carl Maston 1959," accessed 07/21/2022.)
