Building History

The Agricultural College, Experiment Station and School of Science of the State of Washington's first large-scale building, Ferry Hall #1 was begun in 02/1892 according to plans drawn up by the Spokane architect Herman Preusse (1847-1926). It served as a dormitory serving men and women on separate floors.

The dormitory lasted only five years before it burned by an accidental fire.

Building Notes

According to the Washington State University Libraries, Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, Ferry Hall #1 was the eighth building erected on campus. (See Washington State Libraries.edu, "Ferry Hall, 1897," accessed 09/02/2021.)

Demolition

A spark generated in a ground-floor kitchen at 1:30 a.m. on 11/23/1897 caused a blaze that destroyed Ferry Hall #1. Ferry Hall #2 replaced it, erected during 1899 and 1900.
