Building History

The German-born blacksmith Louis Roeder (born 01/28/1832 in Darmstadt, Germany-d. 02/20/1918 in Los Angeles, CA) operated a shop on the west side of Spring Street south of First Street c. 1878. By 1888, this office building stood nearby, likely on the same site, as the earlier smithy.

Roeder came to the US by about 1851 and married in 1865, having nine children with his wife Wilhelmine "Minnie" Huth (born 02/22/1842 in New York-d. 03/24/1910 in Los Angeles, CA).

Building Notes

The noted architect Robert Brown Young (1855-1914) maintained his office in the Roeder Building in 1887-1889.
