Building Notes

An untitled note in the Oroville Register newspaper in 1890 mentioned some of the staff at the Cole Grammar School in Oakland: "J.P. Garlick remains principal of the Cole grammar School where he has been many years. He is one of the ablest teachers in Oakland. His wife is engaged in teaching and has a good position. Miss Nellie Givens and Miss Miner, sister of Mrs. E.W. Fogg, are both teaching in the Cole grammar school." (See untitled note, Oroville Register, 11/20/1890, p. 2.)

The early Cole Elementary School had two notable alumni in its early years: dancer Isadora Duncan, who ended her schooling here c. 1887 and the writer Jack London (1876-1916), who attended between 1887 and 1891. (See Oakland Wiki.org, "Cole Elementary School," accessed 06/11/2021.)

Alteration

The Cole School likely got an addition likely in 1893 or 1894. The San Francisco Chronicle reported in 02/1893: "The plans for the addition to the Cole Grammar School were adopted and the work will be commenced at once. The addition will cost $10,000." (See "The School Board," San Francisco Chronicle, 02/28/1893, p. 10.)
