Demolition

The Allegrini House was leveled in 1984. John Chase, in The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture, said of its razing: "An affection for the past has encouraged an animated revivalism in Santa Cruz. However, it has also snuffed out the flame of modernism. An example of the local disinterest in domestic modernism would be the entirely needless destruction in 1984 of the premier International Style house in Santa Cruz, the sleek 1939-41 Allegrini house, designed by Wilton Smith.” (See John Leighton Chase, The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture, Third Edition, [Santa Cruz, CA: Museum of Art and History, 2005], p. ix.)
