Overview

This two-story, timber-frame industrial building accommodated the first home of the Union Iron Works Company in San Francisco, CA.

Building History

The Union Iron Works Foundry #1 opened in 1849, and consisted of a two-story, board-and-batten-sided building and an adjoining one-story, wood-framed wing. Both portions of the foundry were topped by gable roofs.

The enterprise prospered, and was replaced by a more fire-resistant masonry building of three stories by 1858, at least. In 1858, it was owned by Peter Donahue.
