The theatrical manager Maurice Emil Mayer (born 09/24/1853 in Cologne, Germany-d. 03/22/1907 in San Francisco, CA) and his wife, Sarah Belasco Mayer, (born 02/25/1857 in San Francisco, CA-d. 02/08/1932 in San Francisco, CA) resided at the flat at 1704 Sutter Street in 1904. Mayer immigrated to the US from Hamburg, Germany, on 09/01/1873. He first settled in Mississippi, where he became a US citizen in 1879, and then moved to San Francisco, CA. In San Francisco, he worked for more than a decade in partnership with Frederick Belasco (1862-1920). The Mayer and Belasco Familiies who jointly managed a number of theatres and acting troupes in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, lived close by to one another. in San Francisco in 1910. According to that year's US Census, The widowned Frederick Belasco, who managed the Alcazar Theatre and others in San Francisco with Maureice Mayer, lived next door at 1702 Sutter Street. At 1704, three related families resided, that of Edward Heringhi (1852-1926) and Hannah Belasco Heringhi (1858-1927), Edward Belasco (1874-1937) and his wife, Anne Levy Belasco (1881-1953), and Sarah Mayer, her son, Emanuel Belasco Mayer (1884-1941) and two servants, H. Kochi (born c. 1885 in Japan) and C. Shiraishi (born c. 1882 in Japan).
