Building History

Los Angeles architect Frank L. Stiff made designs for the Sunset Hills Presbyterian Church in 1916. The Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer reported in its issue of 11/11/1916: "Archt. Frank L. Stiff, 1102 Van Nuys Bldg., is preparing plans for a frame bungalow church to be built at Childs and Lucille Aves. for Sunset Hills Presbyterian Church. Dimensions, 40x60 ft.; concrete foundation, redwood siding, shingle roof, pine trim and floors, plumbing, wiring, plastered interior, gas heaters. (See "Bungalow Church," Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, vol. XVIIII, no. 2, 11/11/1916, p. 18.)

The church ran into financial difficulties when building the church in 1917, as three contractors filed suit against the congregation to recover fees. As reported in the 04/07/1917 issue of the Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, contractor Thomas W. Hart, the A.J. Braasch Heater Company, L.A. Lime Company and R.L. Hinckley Company all field suit against the Sunset Hills Church, being built on lot 10, block 6 of the Childs Heights Tract. These actions were filed on 03/31/1917. (See "Recorded April 2" and "Recorded March 31," Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, vol. XVIII, no. 23, 04/07/1917, p. 33.)
