Having opened 02/09/1929, the Chateau Marmont was built for developer, Fred Horowitz. In 1929-1930, Horowitz engaged in a lawsuit with architect William Douglas Lee over fees, which the architect won in September 1930. For many years, this Norman Revival Style has been a hotel for stars who prefer privacy over exposure. The Chateau Marmont was sold in 1931 for $750,000.

Additions and alterations were made to the hotel after its purchase by a syndicate led by Beverly Hills attorney, Marvin Rowan, in 1975. Work occurred in 1975-1977. The Chateau Marmont Annex was designed by W. Gayle Daniel.
