Building History

Dr. Hawthorne and Dr. Loryea were the physicians-in-charge and proprietors of the Oregon State Idiotic and Insane Asylum. Sanctioned by the state, it was privately owned and managed. An advertisement noted that the poor needed special permission to show up for treatment. "The Indigent will make application to the County Judge for a 'permit' to obtain admission." The asylum maintained a Downtown Portland office at W. Weatherford's Drug Store, 139 Front Street, in 1864. (See Portland, Oregon Directory, 1864, p. 76.)
