Overview

The four-story Colman Annex stood across Post Alley just to the west of the Colman Building, at 810-814 Western Avenue. It was completed in 1898.

Building History

The Seattle Daily Times,in its roundup of weekly real estate transactions, illustrated the "...fine new stone Colman block on Western Avenue, which cost between $80,000 and $100,000." (See "Building and Realty Report for the Past Week," Seattle Daily Times, 07/09/1898, p. 9.)

Building Notes

The Seattle Starnoted a fire that occurred at the Colman Block Annex in 1920: "Fire that lasted only 12 minutes did from $30,000 to $50,000 damage to expensive furs in the workshop of the Hudson Bay Co., in the Colman building annex at Western ave. and Marion st. at 6 a.m. yesterday." (See "$30,000 Damage in Early Morning Fire," Seattle Star, 04/23/1920, p. 1.)

Alteration

A note in the Pacific Builder and Engineer noted that "Steel step fire escapes will be erected in the rear of the colman annex at 810-14 Western av from the st level to the 4th fl." (See "Building: Business," Pacific Builder and Engineer, vol. XXV, no. 7, 02/14/1919, p. 3.)

Demolition

The Colman Building Annex was razed and replaced with a parking lot. Later the Post Building (888 Western Avenue) was erected on the site.
