Overview

The Pacific Electric Railway Company extended its lines to Fullerton late during the firm's development in 1917. The cost of building the rail line from La Habra to Fullerton was set at about $425,000. (See City of Fullerton.gov, "Il Ghiotto Restaurant," accessed 02/13/2018.) This Mission Revival Style concrete depot was opened the following year in 1918. (See Electric Railway Historical Association of Southern California.org, "La Habra-Yorba Linda-Fullerton Line," accessed 02/13/2018.)

Building History

This minimal Mission train station, built very inexpensively for about $10,000, was constructed rapidly in 11-12/1918. (See Train Web.com, "Pacific Electric Depot," accessed 02/13/2018.)

The La-Habra-Yorba Linda-Fullterton line of the Pacific Electric's Red Car service was discontinued in 01/1938. The building was converted to serve Greyhouse buses in about 1950. It continued to operate as a bus station until 1976, when it became incorporated into planning for a newFullerton Transportation Center. It became used as a restaurant in 1981, and has continued in this role to the present. (See City of Fullerton.gov, "Il Ghiotto Restaurant," accessed 02/13/2018.)

Building Notes

The interior of the building retained its original open truss roof framing when opened as a restaurant.

Passenger service ended in 1938, but freight service shipping citrus fruit out of the city continued until 1948.
