Overview

Built for a real estate developer, Charles C. Haskin and his wife, Ida Chadwick, this two-floor Queen Anne Style residence has stood on this block since 1894. Two city directories indicated that he worked in real estate. This Angelino Heights neighborhood was still, in 2018, filled with Victorian dwellings, one of the highest concentrations in Los Angeles.

Building History

WI-born Charles Charlton Haskin (b. 01/12/1852-d. 01/24/1899) lived in this residence until at least 1897. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1897, p. 432.) He was called "Haskins" in the 1895 (p. 671) and 1897 Los Angeles City Directories. He was called "Haskin" in theLos Angeles, California, City Directory, 1896, (p. 670). A gravestone from this era in Angelus Rosedale Cemetery read "Charles C. Haskin." He passed away in 1899. His wife lived on until 1912. They had two children, Charlton Charles Haskin (1890-1951) and Hazel F. Haskin (1892–1966).

Prior to Los Angeles, it is thought that Haskin may lived in Elkhart, IN, in 1880, where he worked as a notions salesman.(See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana; Roll: 275; Page: 497C; Enumeration District: 043, accessed 02/09/2018.) He married Ida in Racine County, WI, on 01/06/1890, and had two children born in IL in 1890 and 1892.

Building Notes

The book, Landmarks of Los Angeles, indicated that this house dated to 1888. (See Patrick McGrew, Landmarks of Los Angeles, [New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1994], p. 41.) Haskin was not listed in the Los Angeles California, City, Directory, 1890nor theLos Angeles, California, City Directory, 1892.

The Los Angeles County Assessor indicated that the house was built in 1895. It noted that the house contained four bedrooms and one bath in 2018.
