El Camino Real
San Mateo, CA

Overview

San Francisco banker and investor John Parrott, Sr., (1811-1884) purchased a 260-acre property and residence of MA-born sea captain Frederick William Macondray, (1803-1862) on El Camino Real in the 1860s. He spent some time altering the residence to his own tastes, completing the job in 1868. Macondray was an early settler in San Francisco, and built Brookside in San Mateo for summer. use. Parrott also used it as a summer place, rechristening it "Bayside."

Building Notes

The web site of the Baywood Owners Improvement Association stated: "Eventual landowners Frederick W. Macondray and his wife sold a 377 acre plot of the rancho to John Parrott on February 1, 1860 for $30,000. Legend says John Parrott fell in love with this area years before, when he and William D.M. Howard camped on the banks of San Mateo Creek after being chased by a bear. Besides a stand of oak and bay trees (on what is now approximately 120 West Third Avenue), John Parrott built his beloved “Baywood” mansion in 1868."
