San Gabriel, CA

Overview

Playwright John Steven McGroarty wrote "The Mission Play" and performed it for the first time in 1912 at this venue near the San Gabriel Mission in San Gabriel, CA. The play became a hit with locals and particularly tourists from 1912 until the Depression era. McGroarty became so successful he built a new playhouse for performances of The Mission Play from 1927 until 1932.

Building Notes

The garden outside the playhouse had 21 miniature models of the California missions displayed for playgoers to admire during intermissions and between performances.
