Overview
As noted by the San Francisco Theatres.com website, there were three Adelphi Theatres that opened between 1850 and 1877. This establishment at 607 California Street opened on 04/28/1877 and lasted until 1884. (See Bill Counter, San Francisco Theatres.com, “The Adelphi Theatre,” published 01/2019, accessed 02/01/2024.)
Building History
The Adelphi Theatre was listed in the San Francisco City Directory, 1879, in its business directory, under "Amusement--Places of," along with 16 other destinations, including 10 spots that called themselved theatres. Two of these facilities were assembly halls, such as Pratt's Hall, where various forms of entertainment could be staged. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1879, p. 935.)
The number of places of amusement was up from five listed in 1858. (See The San Francisco Directory for the Year 1858, [San Francisco: Henry G. Langley, 1858], p. 300.)
