Streets were renumbered in Los Angeles c. 1889-1890. Before renumbering, the Saint Charles Hotel operated at 206-208 North Main Street.

Overview

The Saint Charles Hotel was in operation in Los Angeles by 04/1878. (See "Local Brevities," Los Angeles Herald, vol. 9, no. 123, 04/20/1878, p. 3.) It was still in existence in 1895. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1895, p. 1597.) The Saint Charles, along with the Natick House, Saint Elmo, and Hotel Nadeau, were some of the most prestigious hotels in Los Angeles during the late 19th century. The Saint Charles was located just down the street from the Saint Elmo, located at 343 North Main Street.

Building Notes

In 1887, W.Y Newlands was the proprietor of the Saint Charles Hotel, at 206-208 North Main Street. He also dealt in wines and liquors from a store at 13 Commercial Street. Newlands lived in the Saint Charles in 1887. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1887, p. 310.)

A note in the Los Angeles Herald on 05/28/1875 read: "The owner of the St. Charles Hotel is considering the project of building a third story to the two-story part of that hotel." (See "Local Brevities," Los Angeles Herald, 05/28/1875, p. 3.)
