Overview

This Sterling Drug Store was in operation at this address in 1948. Sterling Drug had been founded in Santa Barbara in 1902 by Maine-born pharmacist Samuel Curtis Pinkham (1870-1935), who operated his first store with a partner from 1902 until 1914 at 609 State Street. (In 1910, there was also a second Sterling Drug Store at 1227 State.) In 1914, he split with this partner, and took the Sterling Drug name with him to a new location on the first floor of the San Marcos Building at 1137 State Street. Pinkham sold the store in 1928 to I.S. Pladson and Joseph Falkenstein, but it remained at 1137 State. Pladson and Falkenstein moved it across the street to 1118 State in 1936 or 1937.
