Overview

The Stanwood Fraternal Association erected this Western false-front meeting hall in 1902 or 1903, but sold it to Stanwood's Lodge #249 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in 1909. It functioned as the IOOF's home until 1937, when the Stanwood lodge merged with that of Mount Vemon. This combined entity maintained the vacant building until 1939, when Edward and Marie Bradley purchased it as a storage facility for their hardware business. In 04/2000, the Bryants' heirs sold the building to the Stanwood Area Historical Society for $270,000, Thereafter, it became known as the "Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center" for Stanwood residents.

Building History

The Stanwood's Lodge #249 was founded in 1908, and leased the lodge for its first meetings in that year. It purchased the building from the Stanwood Fraternal Association which built the facility in 1902 or 1903. In 1901, the local Masonic Hall, F & AM Camanio Lodge #19, was erected across the street at 27205 102nd Avenue NW.

Alterations

The IOOF Hall underwent a comprehensive remodeling in 1922. According to Karen Prasse, who wrote the National Register Nomination for the hall: "The increased use of the building led the IOOF Lodge in 1922 to finance a remodel of the building. At the time called a "big transformation", the interior walls and woodwork were repainted and local decorative painter K.A. Hultman was hired to create a series of murals on the walls of the upper lodge room. Other additions included the installation of globe lighting placed on top of new "white enameled" pillars next to the two stations or alters at the opposite ends of the main room, and new raised platforms around the edge of the room."

The Fisher Construction Company of Burlington, WA, performed repairs to one wall of the Norgaard Cultural Centerin 2014.
