Building History

Ballard's Central School had grades 11 an 12 added to it in 1901. This first high school in Ballard was very small, having a faculty of three and a very small student body. When the first class graduated on 06/23/1902, only three students composed the group. (See "History of Ballard High School," accessed 04/15/2015.) Three years later, however, enrollment had burgeoned, with 80 students attending; many of these were of Scandinavian ancestry, as Ballard became a favorite settlement site for large numbers of Norwegians, many of whom came from logging, farming or fishing backgrounds in the less developed northern parts of the country. The City of Seattle annexed Ballard in 1907, and the school became part of the Seattle Public Schools system. It operated as Ballard's high school for nine years after annexation, when a new Ballard High School #2 opened for classes on 01/03/1916. (See "New Ballard High To Be Opened Tomorrow," Seattle Times, 01/02/1916, p. 20.)
