Overview

This landmark Second Empire Style residence housed Daniel and Clara Pearson, early Euro-American settlers and city leaders in what would become known as Stanwood. Built in 1895, it housed the Pearsons until the 1920s. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and In 1991, it became the headquarters of the Stanwood Historical Society.

Building History

Daniel Orlando Pearson, Sr., (1846-1929), a pioneer in this section of Snohomish County, operated the town's general store and served as its first mayor and an early postmaster. Pearson arrived from Lowell, MA, to a farm on Whidbey Island in 1868. His wife-to be, Clara (1849-1910), also from Lowell, ventured across country herself at age 19 to join him there. In 1877, they moved to a logging camp near the mouth of the Stillaguamish River, then called "Centerville." Here, the Pearson's store thrived and both D.O. and Clara became town leaders. This ample, two-floor, Second Empire Style house, reflected, by 1895, the Pearsons' prosperity and local social prominence. At the request of the US Postal Service, which had too many Centervilles across the country, Pearson changed the town's name to "Stanwood," in honor of his wife, Clara Stanwood Pearson .
