Building History

In 1909, Loring P. Rixford won the competition for the design of a new club house for the Bohemian Club, probably the Bay Area's most influential men's club of the time. The San Francisco Call wrote of the building on 02/07/1909: "Loring P. Rixford, architect, supervisor and Bohemian clubman, has won the anonymous competition for the best plans for the new $250,000 nest of the Owl to be erected at Post and Taylor streets. That Rixford's plans had been accepted was informally announced yesterday to the members during luncheon. Rixford's plan provides for a three story brick building at the corner of Post and Taylor streets. His provisions for club conveniences are unique, it is understood, one of the principal features being a superbly fitted 'jinks' room for the world famous skylarking of the devotees of the Owl. The exact cost of the new Bohemian club building has not yet been determined, but it is understood that it will be approximately $250,000. Two plans for financing the new home of Bohemia have been proposed, one the issuance of bonds to be disposed of among the members, and the other the mortgaging of the property for a loan. The Pacific Mutual life insurance company has announced a willingness to make a loan of $200,000 at any time the club asks for it. The property at Post and Taylor streets is owned by the club and has been appraised at $160,000. There is one mortgage of $40,000 upon the lot."
