Two miners, Almon Frary, Sr. and Joseph Farley, purchased the gold mining claim of Charles Hensley and 11 other men just after 1870. Frary and Farley operated the productive mine for several years before the San Diego County Sheriff shut their operation down due to outstanding debts. (See Leland Fetzer, "Governor Robert W. Waterman, Waldo Waterman, and the Stonewall Mine, 1886-1891,"Accessed 03/27/2014.) An auction was held for the mine in 1876, but it languished between 1874-1884 before reopening.

The mine site lies within the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
