This first dry goods store owned by the Verdier Brothers, Félix and Émile, operated at the southeast corner of Sutter Street and Kearny Street in Gold Rush-era San Francisco, CA. Newly rich miners could come here to blow their savings on fine French merchandise and champagne. The store prospered and, nine years later, moved to a new location in the luxurious Occidental Hotel at Montgomery and Sutter Streets.
