Building History

This hotel, established by Daniel Jefferson Harris (c. 1832-1890), the founder of Fairhaven, WA, was in operation beginning on 06/04/1884. Harris erected the two-story, gable-roofed inn on the northeast corner of 4th Street and Harris Street. Harris leased the facility to James Weed for three years, but this arrangement collapsed later in 1883 when a dispute arose between the two. Thereafter, Charles Miller, and his wife, became resident managers.

When a second Fairhaven Hotel opened in 1890, this inn became known as the "Great Northern" for its proximity to new Great Northern railway's rail tracks. Due to infringement on the name with the railroad, the name was shortened to "Northern" in 1893. An over night stay cost $1.25 at this time. The owner of the competing Saint Louis Hotel bought the Northern in 1894, and utilized it as a flophouse for Chinese laborers.

Alteration

At some point, the two-story, gable-roofed hotel had a third story added. The name "Northern Hotel" was painted on the front facade, just below the parapet.

Demolition

Owners moved the Northern Hotel to the corner of 5th Street and Larrabee Avenue in 1904 before tearing it down in 1910.
