Building History

English-born architect Robert Stacy-Judd (1884-1975), an expert on Pre-Columbian culture, designed the hotel with--Ironically--Mayan decorative motifs. The Aztec Hotel was a landmark along Route 66 as it passed through Monrovia, CA.

Building Notes

This Mayan Revival style hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, level of significance: Local. Tel: 626-358-3231 (2006). In 2008, it advertised having 44 guest rooms.

Alteration

Kathie Reece-McNeill undertook a renovation of the Aztec Hotel between 2000-2005. She utilizing funds and expertise provided by the State of California Office of Historic Preservation and the National Route 66 Foundation. Project Manager Glen Duncan and Historic Architect Joe Catalano worked on the renovation.
