The County Board of Supervisors retained building contractor M.E. Gilmore to build a new courthouse to replace the second that burned in an Independence, CA, fire on 06/30/1886. This two-story, wood-frame courthouse was smaller and less expensive than the previous, costing only about $10,000 compared to the nearly $16,000 expended in 1872-1873.

Demolished; the third courthouse was razed in 1923 to make room for a fourth designed by the renowned architect William H. Weeks (1864-1936), still in use in 2012. The third was located on county land just to the southwest of Weeks's new facility.
