Following the first courthouse's destruction in the Lone Pine Earthquake of 03/26/1872, E. Chaquette completed this two-story, wood-frame county building in 1873. It cost about $15,900.

Demolished; a fire in Independence, CA, on 06/30/1886 destroyed the courthouse and 37 other buildings. Two women managed to save the county's precious records and its interior furniture.
