John T. Jacobsen (1903-1998) served as the Supervising Architect for the John Graham Company which had the contract to design the Ala Moana Shopping Center, one of the earliest large-scale retail projects on the islands. It was completed the year of Hawaii's statehood, 1959. Lionel H. Pries (1897-1968), the noted architect and educator at the University of Washington, worked with John Graham and Company at the time, and assisted in the design of the interior and landscape. (See Jeffrey Karl Ochsner, Lionel H. Pries, Architect, Artist, Educator, [Seattle: University of Washington Press, 2007], p. 378.)
