Overview

Stiles Hall was a private organization founded in Berkeley, CA, in 1884. According to its website, it "...is a private, non-profit agency dedicated to serving the broader community while enriching the lives of students at the University of California, Berkeley [UCB]." Located in various places since 1884, Stiles Hall has been a residence hall and student services center for UCB stuents.

Building History

In 1902, the Berkeley's Young Men's Christian Association met in Stiles Hall in Berkeley. A residence hall operated by the Young Men's Christian Association Club operated at 2239 Channing Way from at least 1899 until 1902. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1902, p. 610.)

Building Notes

University of California Berkeley Professor H. Leland Vaughan (1905-1974) and his wife and partner, Adele (1910-1954), worked on the landscape design of Stiles Hall in 1949.

Demolition

Stiles Hall #1 was torn down to make way for the UCB Men's Gymnasium, completed in 1933.
