Building History

James Leary Flood (1857-1926) and his first wife, Marie Rosina Fritz Flood (1862-1989) purchased this residence in 08/1896. Marie ran away from home c. 1878 and made her way to San Francisco, where she worked as an actress and burlesque star. She married Flood in 1887. She lived in this Pacific Heights house for less than two years, before she passed away on 01/15/1898. Following her death, James Flood took a six-month trip to Asia, in the company of Marie's sister, Maud, her brother, Walter, an adopted daughter, Constance, a maid and a valet. Flood clearly turned to Maud to help assuage his grief; the two married in her hometown of Kansas City, MO, shortly thereafter on 02/09/1899.

James Leary Flood was the son of the Comstock Lode silver baron, James Clair Flood (1826-1889), one of the richest men in San Francisco during the 1870s and 1880s. The Flood Family had several houses, including the Flood Mansion, initially used for summer use, in Menlo Park, CA, and another exurban retreat in Alma, CA, (demolished) purchased c. 1894. Flood lived in this residence at 1816 Pacific Avenue until a new house erected between 1912 and 1915 was completed at 2222 Broadway in Pacific Heights.
