The Chapin block was built on the southeast corner of 2nd Avenue and Pike Street.

Building History

Herman Chapin (born 1858 in Brookline, MA), President of the Boston National Bank, developed this commercial building at 2nd Avenue and Pike Street in 1900. An article in the Seattle Daily Times stated: "Good progress is being made in removing the shacks, old buildings and debris from the lots at the southeast corner of Pike Street and Second Avenue preparatory to commencing the construction of the new Chapin block." (See "Notes," Seattle Daily Times, 03/24/1900, p. 13.)

Building Notes

The Chapin Block stood two stories tall and had masonry cladding. In c. 1905, the following commercial enterprises were located in the Chapin Block #2: Rosenthal and Company Printing; New York Ladies Suit and Skirt Manufacturers; Horton and Monro Electricians; Home Light and Supply Company; Manufactures Piano Company; Chicago Clothing Company, Incorporated.
