Building Notes

Lilly, Bogardus and Company operated its dock and warehouse at the foot of University Street (at what is now Alaskan Way, what was then known as "Railroad Avenue,") in Downtown Seattle, WA, c. 1900. At this time, the firm was run by Edward F. Bogardus; its dockside facilities included a wharf, three gable-roofed warehouses, and a large warehouse topped by an arched roof, with the name "Lilly Bogardus & Co." painted in large letters on it. The gable-roofed warehouses were designated Piers A, B, and C. The peak sections of each warehouse was slighted elevated from the rest of the roof, providing wall space on which to located banks of clerestories on the north and south sides. This configuration provided daylight to penetrate the vast spaces.

In 1901, signs placed at the peak of the gable indicated the pier letter and the name "Pacific Coast Co." The phrase "Lilly-Bogardus Dock" was painted on the west side of the building, facing Elliott Bay and incoming ships.
