Overview

The Sperry and Perry Hotel, also known as "The Murphys Historic Hotel," has been in operation since 1856, making it the State of California's longest running establishment of its kind.

Building History

James L. Sperry and John Perry established the Sperry and Perry Hotel in Murphys, CA, on 08/20/1856, to serve those coming to and from the CA gold fields. The pair also operated the Mammoth Grove Hotel near Arnold, CA, c. 1860. Ownership passed through several hands resulting in periodic name changes; in 1862, Sperry operated the hotel on his own. Henry Atwood became the owner in 1881, and he renamed it the "Mitchler Hotel." In 1945, the McKimins Family purchased the property, and again rechristened it the "Murphys Hotel." The College of the Pacific (later known as the University of the Pacific), headquartered in Stockton, CA, obtained the hotel in 1963.
