Jevne began his grocery business at 38-40 North Spring Street in 1882, finding great success with his aggressive marketing, state-of-the-art ordering and modern delivery techniques. By 1889, he employed 27 people to deliver food using 13 horses. This second store, located in the three-story Wilcox Building, occupied space at 135-138 North Spring Street. In 1898, pioneered the use of automobiles to deliver groceries in place of horse-drawn wagons.
