Fort Ord closed as part of the Defense Realignment Closure of the 1990s, and the City of Seaside purchased the former military land. The City of Seaside chose BSL Golf Corporation to manage the Bayonet and Black Horse courses between 1997-2005, and Seaside Resort Development, LLC, has managed the property since 2005.

This 18-hole, 7,024-yard course was named for the 11th Cavalry ("Black Horse") Regiment by General Edwin Carnes in 1963-1964. (The Black Horse Regiment operated from Fort Ord 1919-1940.) Carnes served as the Commanding General of Fort Ord between 04/1963-06/1965. The par 72 course, has a slope of 141 and a rating of 73.7.
