Building History

This office building was likely erected during the 1880s and served as the headquarters for the real estate and loan firm of George W. Stimson and his brother Charles M. Stimson. According to the Los Angeles Timesof 02/01/1891: "Woodworth & Marriner have traded Stimson Bros' brick block in Los Angeles to Charles W. Gleason of Boston, for a consideration of $35,000." (See "Brevities, Los Angeles Times, 02/01/1891, p. 7.)

The Stimson Brothers firm had an office at 230 West 1st Street by 1893. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1893, p. 734.) By 1896, Stimson Brothers had an office in Room #320 of the Byrne Block, 253 South Broadway. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1896, p. 1285.)

George Stimson would go on to build speculative housing around Los Angeles during the 1890s and 1900s. An advertisement for a Stimson-built house ran in the Los Angeles Times in 1904: “An elegant new home, 9 rooms, 5 large, air bedchambers, fine bath, upper rear porch, fine view, hardwood floors throughout the house, walls richly tinted, fine mantel in living-room, dining-room in Flemish oak, paneled wainscoting, fine fixtures, furnace, cement porch. This is a ‘Stimson’ house, and this fact alone is a guarantee for its stability and artistic effects; Located near Sixth and Lucas; high ground; this close-in neighborhood is rapidly growing in value.” (See “Houses: $7500,” Los Angeles Times, 11/27/1904, sect. V, p. 2 [38].)

In 1893, the Stimson Brothers' Block stood at 754-760 Upper Main Street in Los Angeles. (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1893, p. 734.)
