Three couples-- Bill and JoAnne Walker Raney, Dick and Casey Daniel, and Phil and Pat Chamberlin-- started the Nickelodeon Theatre in Santa Cruz, CA, on 07/01/1969 showing a double feature of Vilgot Sjöman's controversial Swedish film, "I Am Curious (Yellow)," and a documentary on the Yukon Gold Rush, "City of Gold." This new theatre was originally designed to be a twin, but the operators had money to build only one. They engaged the Berkeley architect, Berkeley architect John Elphick to design the cinema. According to Bill Raney: "We explained to John that what we wanted was basically simple: an innovative theatre design that was both a "work of art" and "state of the art." Designer Roy Rydell and contractor Ed Cacace collaborated on designing and building the theatre.
