According to G. Z. Brown and Mark DeKay, authors of Sun, Wind and Light, "Remote storage such as a rock bed is also useful when mass cannot be located near collection and when collection cannot be located near rooms that need heat For a San Francisco Residence and Remodel, William Leedy was faced with a very steep site and rowhouse ends facing south and west. the ingenious solution uses a long south-facing sunspace on the top floor, set to the north of a south side outdoor zone between the buildings. Because of seismic requirements, the mass could not be located on the top floor, so a rock bed is located at the lowest level, built into the hill behind the garage. The sunspace and rock bed are linked by a system of ducts, fans, and dampers." (See G. Z. Brown and Mark DeKay, Sun, Wind and Light, [New York: John Wiley and Sons, Incorporated, 2001], 282.)

Architect William Leedy remodeled this residence to be more energy-efficient c. 1980.
