Building History

This was the second courthouse used by Placer County, which itself was created from southern portions of two other counties, Yuba and Sutter, in 1851. The Placer County Courthouse #1 was in use from 1851-12/1853 in a log cabin located on Court Street in Auburn. This new Greek Revival Style building was erected by 12/1853 and measured 40 by 60 feet in plan. A jail was erected adjacent to the courthouse shortly after the courthouse was finished. Both the courthouse and jail were two-floor, timber-frame buildings covered in white-stained clapboard siding.
