Fireman's Fund Insurance Company began in 1863 in San Francisco, CA, as an insurer that originally donated 10% of its profits to families of firemen killed in duty. It became a leading property insurer during the 19th century and made something of a specialty of providing insurance for the motion picture industry. Fireman's Fund moved from its old headquarters in San Francisco, CA's Laurel Heights Neighborhood to the Marin County city of Novata, CA, c. 1982. The financial services company, American Express, purchased Fireman's Fund in 1978, but its ownership of the company nearly ruined it. In 1985, insurance executive Jack Byrne and investor Warren Buffett crafted the largest initial purchase offering of stock in history (to that time) and raised enough capital to allow Fireman's Fund to become independent again. Byrne and his executives at Fireman's Fund improved its balance sheet to the point where another insurance giant, Germany's Allianz AG (renamed Allianz SE in 2006), the largest insurance group in the world at the time, bought the company 01/02/1991. In 2006, Fireman's Fund employed 4,100 and had over $12 billion in assets.
