House Beautiful's landscape architecture writer, Alice L. Dustan, chose to discuss a fence design done by San Francisco landscape architect, Thomas Church, for the Peerys. Dustan noted how Church's double-layered fence gave a small patio a sense of added space. She wrote: "To give an illusion of distance on a small property, build a 'shadow' fence, as landscape architect Thomas Church has done for the H.T. Peerys of Palo Alto, California. It's a solid, creosoted board fence with cross pieces nailed between supports and painted white to give contrast. These strips also serve as trellis for vines and espaliered shrubs." (See Alice L. Dustan, "How not to be a Goldfish," House Beautiful, 89:11, 11/1947, p. 210.)
