Augustus Chapman, an early Chico civic leader and real estate speculator, commissioned the architect Cleveland Walker to design this wood-frame Italianate house. in 2010, the political scientist and local historian Michele Shover owned the Chapman House; Shover taught political science at Chico State University for 38 years and was the author of numerous works on local history.

This two-story Italianate dwelling occupied a large corner lot when built in 1879. The property contained a large carriage house. Chapman developed the neighborhood called "Chapman's Addition."
