The U.S. Army Air Force created this small auxiliary airfield for use during World War II. It served as an emergency landing strip by student pilots at the Portland Army Air Base. (Another auxiliary strip used by Portland's 44th Army Air Force Base Unit was the Eugene Flight Strip, outside of Eugene, OR.)

This small, 144-acre airfield had one asphalt-paved runway in 2010, measuring 5,004 feet x 100 feet.

The Oregon State Legislature voted to rename this state facility the "Wes Lematta Field" on 05/26/2009, for the owner of Columbia Helicopters, headquartered at Aurora State Airport.
