Alson Lennon Brown, the son of a local timber baron, commissioned the Seattle architect, John Graham, Sr., to design the Rector Hotel at this location between 1911-1913. Brown retained Harry Brandt to build it; Graham originally presented a grander, 9-story scheme to Brown, who opted for a smaller, less ornate, Beaux-Arts design. Storefronts were designed by Herbert B. Pearce
