The building was built by Philip Anschutz, the head of the Los Angeles-based Anschutz Entertainment Group, and the L.A. Arena Company. It is a multi-purpose events center located next to the main Los Angeles Convention Center. Construction occurred between 03/31/1998-10/17/1999.

At its opening in 1999, Staples, a discount chain of office-supplies, purchased the facility's naming rights at a cost of $100,000 for 20 years.
