This first-order lighthouse, ordered by Congress in 1895, was dedicated on 06/30/1898; a Maritime Museum gained ownership from the U.S. Coast Guard in 2004.

The lighthouse rests on a sandstone foundation 12-feet thick, on which a round brick structure was erected; the brick was weatherproofed by a coating of cement. One hundred thirty-five iron stairs led to the top.
