In 1924, the South Pasadena School Board succeeded in passing a levy raising money to build a site for a new junior high school. In 1927, it allocated $555,000 for the erection and equipping of the middle school, construction began in mid-01/1928 and South Pasadena Middle School opened on 09/10/1928. Several notable artworks were executed for the school; the artist Lucile Lloyd painted the mural "Madonna of the Covered Wagon" in the South Pasadena Middle School's Auditorium in 1928.
