The field was known as Alesandro Aviation Field for less than a month in 03/1918, when it was renamed in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Peyton Conway March, Jr. (1896-1918), who died in his Curtiss JN4 aircraft during a training flight 02/18/1918 near Fort Worth, TX; March was the son of the Army's Chief of Staff. The field became known as the March Air Force Base in 01/13/1948 (after the establishment of the Air Force as a separate branch of the military). The active duty military gradually disengaged activities at the field between 1993-1996; it became known officially as the Air Force Reserve Command, March Air Reserve Base, on 04/01/1996.
